On Friday 6th November we were invited to attend Merseycare’s annual Conference. This year the theme was ADVOCACY.
We got together a team of people who worked really hard preparing the presentation and practicing their parts.
Phil did the introduction telling everyone about People First Merseyside, our history and our 27 years working in Merseyside.
Paddy talked about being a founder member of People First Merseyside and how it has changed his life from being shy and not able to speak up to being a director and speaking up to bosses . Since being part of the group he has travelled the world and owns his own house.
Lisa talked about the work that we do and the training we deliver. She talked about how we encourage and empower people to speak up for themselves.
Geraldine told people about our choir and how we have made real changes to people’s lives: by reducing their social isolation, improving their self-confidence and self-esteem, improving their psychological wellbeing.
Alex, Sarah and Phil gave presentations about the difference People First Merseyside has made to their lives; enabling them to be more confident and to speak up for themselves.
Lesley, Lisa and Geraldine did a fantastic job of the drama we use as part of our training for health professionals. We use real life experiences to show how people with learning disabilities are treated when they go to A & E.
We also showed our 2 videos, the first was of our choir ‘Voices Never Forget’ choir performing the song we wrote about the struggle people with learning disabilities had in the past, particularly those who had been in long term care.
The second film was from our Road Ahead Young Persons project, they had made a film and a rap around the theme of ‘Missing’.
Everyone was very nervous as there were 250 people at the conference and some of us had never spoken in front of that many people before. We had rehearsed a lot so everyone was prepared.
The team did a fantastic job even adlibbing which made the presentation even better and the audience laugh.
We received some fantastic feedback on Twitter which made us all very proud.
